Regional Capacity Building Workshop For Zookeepers of South region at Pilikula Biological Park, Mangalore in collaboration with Central Zoo Authority of India.

A three-day capacity building workshop for zookeepers in collaboration with Central Zoo Authority was held in the seminar/museum hall at Pilikula Biological Park (PBP) from October 23rd -25th 2024. The event drew 39 participants from Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka.

  • Sri H. Jayaprakash Bhandary, Director of Pilikula Biological Park, warmly welcomed dignitaries.
  • Dr. V. Karikalan, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forest, Mangalore Circle, Inaugurated the three days regional capacity building workshop for zookeepers of south region.
  • Dr. Arun Kumar Shetty, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry Department, emphasized about the conservation and hygiene practices in zoos to be followed.

Resource Persons:

  • Ms. Shalu Mesaria, Senior research fellow, Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi presented a talk on 'Bridging Nature and Nurture: Effective Conservation and Education Strategies in Zoos'.
  • A talk on “Biosecurity Measures in Zoos: Significance in Preventing Infectious Diseases” led by Dr. Vasanth Kumar Shetty, Chief Veterinary Officer (Admin), Mangalore.
  • A talk on 'Role of Zoos in Wildlife Conservation and Human-Wildlife Conflict,' was presented by Wildlife Conservationist H.C. Bhuvanesh.
  • Dr. Soorya Prakash Shenoy, Principal Scientist, Arboretum, PBP, delivered an insightful talk on 'The Importance of Flora for Wild Animals.'
  • Mr. Udaya Shetty, Medicinal Plant Expert led an engaging session on 'Medicinal Plants of the Western Ghats: Significance and Applications.
  • Following lunch, participants and resource persons embarked on a guided zoo tour, led by: Dr. Divya Ganesh, Veterinary Officer, Krishna Prasad K.S, Biologist, Kamal Yadav, Education Officer. The visit showcased routine hygiene practices and observation techniques of animals to be observed in the animal enclosures. Breeding and feeding patterns, alongside behavioural insights and also visited the King Cobra breeding centre, highlighting captive breeding procedures.
  • Prof. E. Kunhiraman, Director, MVR Snake Park, Parassinakadavu, accompanied by Ms. Deena, Biologist, MVR Snake Park delivered an insightful talk on 'Captive Animal Management in Zoos.’
  • Dr. Soorya N.R, renowned Herpetofauna Expert, led the last session, sharing his diverse knowledge on ‘Reptile and amphibian species of the Western Ghats.’

The three-day workshop concluded with a valedictory function where Sri H.J. Bhandary, Director, Pilikula Biological Park, warmly welcomed the dignitaries. Prof. E. Kunhiraman, Director, MVR Snake Park, Parassinakadavu, and Sri H.J. Bhandary jointly: Awarded participation certificates and group photo to participants.


New Animal Arrivals at Pilikula Biological Park, Mangalore

Pilikula Biological Park has received animals under the Animal Exchange Programme, approved by the Central Zoo Authority of India. The park welcomed a male Asiatic Lion, a male Indian Grey Wolf, a pair of Gharial crocodiles, and pairs of Silver Pheasants and Golden Yellow Pheasants from Nandankanan Biological Park in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

The surplus animals spared from Pilikula Biological Park comprising two pairs of Wild dog, one male and two female Asian palm civet, a pair of brahminy kite, two pairs of reticulated python and two female large egrets.

Wildlife Week - 2024

WILDLIFE WEEK 2024 CELEBRATIONS AT PILIKULA BIOLOGICAL PARK

On the eve of “Wildlife Week 2024” celebrations, Pilikula Biological Park will be organizing various competitions with the theme “Wildlife conservation through Co-existence”

  1. Drawing Competition – for lower (1st to 5th standard) and higher primary students (6th to 10th standard) will be conducted through online mode. Topic for drawing Competition: 1st to 5th standard - “Colourful Birds”6th to 10th standard - “Pollution Impact in wildlife”
  2. Wildlife Photography Competition- Photography competition will be conducted for all age groups via online mode. Topic: Urban Wildlife.
  3. Story Writing- Story writing competition will be conducted through online mode for 6th standard – PUC students. Topic: Human – Wildlife conflict.
  4. Poster Making – Poster making competition will be conducted for PUC and degree students through online mode. Topic:  Endangered Species of Western Ghats.
  5. Poetry Writing Competition: Poetry writing competition will be conducted for 1st – 5th standard through online mode. Topic: Songs of the Forest.
  6. Slogan Writing Competition: Slogan writing competition will be conducted for 5th- 10th standard students. Topic: Conserve Today, Thrive Tomorrow.

World Lion Day, celebrated annually on August 10th, is dedicated to raising awareness about lion conservation and the critical threats facing lion populations worldwide.

To celebrate World Lion Day 2024, Pilikula Biological Park, Mangalore is organizing an online Face Painting (1st - 5th standard) and Slogan Writing (6th -10th standard) Competition.

Topic : Face Painting and Slogan should be themed on Lions.

At Pilikula Biological Park , we celebrated our marvelous pollinators by creating awareness through information cards on bee conservation and also had an activity for children where we provided them with natural raw materials to make an insect hotel.

WorldBeeDay is celebrated to raise awareness about the threats faced by bees as a result of human activity and to acknowledge the significance of bees in our biodiversity. Bees contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist.

Under animal exchange programme one white female Tiger and one female ostrich are received from Chennai zoo; one male Bengal Tiger, four Dholes and some snake species are being sent to Chennai zoo.
